Privacy policy

The short version

We do not ask for your name, your email or an account, and your quiz answers never leave your browser. The site shows ads served by Google AdSense. Google and its partners may use cookies to choose those ads, including ads based on your visits to other sites, and you can turn personalized ads off at any time (see Advertising below). If you are in the EEA, the UK or Switzerland, you are asked first. We count visits with a cookie-less tool on our own server; it cannot tell who you are (see Analytics below).

Your quiz answers

Every test on this site is scored by JavaScript running on your own device. Your answers are not transmitted to us and are not written to any database. When a test finishes, your browser simply navigates to the page for your result. That result page is a normal public URL — if you share it, you are sharing the result, not your answers.

What is stored on your device

We set no cookies of our own. What the site remembers between visits lives in your browser's local storage: the longer English personality tests and the Chinese test library save your progress and your last result there, and the Chinese tools (tarot, sandplay, the calculators, the life-chart and persona tools, and the chat-style tools) save what you enter into them, including any text you type. All of it stays on your device and is never sent to us. Clearing this site's data in your browser removes it. The cat-meme and dog-meme quizzes also use your browser's session storage for a moment, to carry your score from the questions to the result page; it is gone when you close the tab.

What our host records

Like every website, ours sits behind a hosting provider that keeps standard server logs: the requested page, the time, your IP address, your browser's user-agent string, and the referring page. These are kept briefly for security and troubleshooting and are not used to build a profile of you.

Advertising

This site shows ads served by Google AdSense. Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this website and other websites. Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visits to this site and/or other sites on the internet. When an ad loads, your browser also sends Google what any web request carries, such as your IP address and details about your browser.

You can opt out of personalized advertising in Google's Ads Settings, and out of personalized ads from many other vendors at aboutads.info or, in Europe, youronlinechoices.eu. You will still see ads; they just will not be based on your browsing. Google explains how it uses information from sites that show its ads.

We decide where ads sit on our pages, not which ads appear. Google gives us aggregate reports — how many ads were shown and on which pages — never information about individual visitors.

Analytics

We count visits with Umami, an open-source analytics tool that runs on our own server; nothing goes to a third party. It records the page you viewed, the page that linked you here, your browser and device type, screen size, language, and the country and region your connection comes from. It sets no cookie. Your IP address is used only to work out that location and to tell one visitor from another, and is not stored. Nobody can be picked out of these numbers, and we do not try. Beyond that we still see the server log described above and AdSense's aggregate reports on ads.

If you are in the EEA, the UK or Switzerland

Before any advertising cookie is set, you see a consent message from Google, a consent management platform certified under the IAB Transparency and Consent Framework. You can consent, refuse, or choose purpose by purpose. Refusing does not lock you out of anything on the site; you may see non-personalized or fewer ads instead. You can change or withdraw your choice at any time through the “Privacy and cookie settings” link the message leaves on the page. Our lawful basis for advertising cookies is your consent; for the limited server logging and the cookie-less visit counting described above it is legitimate interest in keeping the site running and secure.

You have the right to request access to, correction of, or deletion of personal data we hold about you, and to complain to your national data protection authority. Because we hold no accounts and no contact details, in practice there is usually nothing for us to retrieve — but write to hello@typicallyyou.com and we will tell you exactly what, if anything, exists. Data that Google processes for advertising is covered by Google's privacy policy.

If you are in California or another US state with a privacy law

We do not sell personal information for money. Showing personalized Google ads can still count as “sharing” or “targeted advertising” under the CCPA, the CPRA and similar state laws, so visitors from those states see a “Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information” link on the page. Using it tells Google to limit how it uses your information and to stop personalizing the ads shown to you here. You can also opt out through Google's Ads Settings as described above, and exercise your other rights by writing to hello@typicallyyou.com.

Children

This site is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has provided personal information through this site, write to hello@typicallyyou.com and we will remove it.

Changes

If this policy changes in a way that matters, the date at the top of this page changes with it. Continuing to use the site after that means you accept the revised policy.
