You improve the room you are in. Not by performing at it — by noticing who is on the edge of it and pulling them in, by responding to what is actually happening rather than to a plan, by being visibly glad to be there. It looks effortless and it is not: sustaining that takes real attention, and you are usually the one who registers that somebody is having a bad night before they have said anything.

What it costs you is the future. Your attention lives in the present, which is exactly why you are good at it, and the consequence is that the boring provisions — the savings, the appointment, the difficult conversation scheduled for next month — keep getting deferred by something more alive. The other thing is harder to see: because you are the one lifting the mood, people stop asking how you are. You will have to say it unprompted, because the role you play makes it invisible.
