You are always in the room, and you are always slightly running it. You attach hard to your people and then start improving them: what they should eat, when they should leave, which of their friends is a problem. It comes from real care and it is usually correct, which is exactly why it is hard to push back on. You are also short on patience with strangers, and you will say so early, in a way that everyone present notices.

The trouble is that being close to someone and being in charge of them are different jobs, and you keep taking the second one when you were only offered the first. Managing is easier than sitting with the fact that a person you love is going to make a bad decision and you cannot stop it. Add the running commentary about outsiders and you can shrink a group without meaning to. The corgis who are easiest to be around are the ones who learned to say the objection once, at normal volume, and then let it go.
